Dutch container ship abandoned after engine room fire in Latvia’s Gulf of Riga

A Dutch-flagged container ship named Escape encountered a fire in its engine room while sailing in Latvia’s Gulf of Riga on 22 February. Despite unsuccessful attempts to put out the fire, all 15 crew members abandoned ship and escaped using a lifeboat. The nearby cargo ship Kairit transferred them to Riga. The reason for the fire is unknown, and it is not certain whether the ship was carrying dangerous cargo. The Escape traveled from the Lithuanian port of Klaipeda to the Latvian port of Riga. The Latvian navy stated that the ship carried “dangerous cargo,” but did not reveal its nature. However, it was later revealed that the cargo consisted of polymers and paint materials, which were not flammable.
