World’s largest container carriers to receive 89 large ships in 2023

Container shipping companies are expected to receive 89 large container ships in 2023 due to aggressive newbuilding orders in 2020 and 2021, according to Alphaliner’s report. The top 11 container carriers will receive these new vessels, with MSC expected to receive the most at 33 ships. The report also notes that MSC’s suspension of its joint 2M Far East-Mediterranean service, and subsequent fleet growth, may signal an intent to create standalone loops outside of the 2M. The world’s largest carrier alliance, OCEAN, will add only a few mid-sized ships in 2023 and will expand with 28 Neo-Panamax ships in 2024.
