Shipping lines record profits despite market weakness in 2022

The world’s largest shipping lines reported a combined EBIT figure of USD 95 billion for the fiscal year 2022, with an estimated increase to USD 208 billion when the remaining carriers are included. The market, however, is showing signs of weakness, with a sharp decrease in transported volumes and a slower increase in freight rates. Figure 1 depicts the reporting lines’ EBIT/TEU, with larger carriers nearly doubling their EBIT/TEU and smaller carriers increasing it by a smaller margin. HMM had the highest EBIT/TEU at 2,055, while ZIM had the lowest at 1,815.
