The container orderbook has reached an all-time high despite a drop in freight rates – BIMCO report

The container orderbook has reached a new record high of 7.54 million TEUs, according to BIMCO’s latest report, showing a substantial change in the worldwide fleet. Despite the drop in freight prices, shipowners continue to place orders for new container ships, resulting in an increase in the orderbook for ten consecutive quarters. The total number of TEUs scheduled for delivery in 2024 and the rest of 2023 is presently 5.03 million. Because 57% of the TEU capacity in the orderbook contains ships with some level of alternative fuel preparation, the delivery of these ships will increase the fuel types used.
