Unaccompanied Freight Surges at London Medway Port Amid Dover Delays
DFDS’s London Medway unaccompanied freight service, which operates between Sheerness (UK) and Calais (France), has experienced a 65% increase in daily unit volumes since its launch in July 2021. Over 50,000 trailers have been transported on ships at the port. The service was launched in response to delays and traffic issues at the Port of Dover. Unaccompanied freight services are seen as an effective solution to the problems caused by customs delays, driver shortages, and storage. Peel Ports Group also recorded a 34% increase in units in August 2021 due to operational problems at Dover. The milestone of 50,000 units is viewed as a landmark achievement by London Medway’s Port Director, Richard Goffin.
